2013 Delta State Signing Class

New Delta State University football head coach Todd Cooley welcomed in the 2013 signing class. The Statesmen added 28 players to the roster on signing day.

 

RJ HULSE

R.J. HULSE | OL | 6-7 | 325
Foley, Ala / Foley HS
Hulse played for coach Todd Watson and the Foley High School Lions.  The 6-foot-7, 325-pound offensive lineman was a standout for new DSU offensive coordinator Joel Williams in the Lions attack.  Hulse, who anchored the offensive line for one Alabama’s top offensive units, participated in the Max Emfinger East-West All-Star Classic as a senior. He helped the Lions offense amass over 2,000 yards passing and rushing last season, including over 50 scoring drives.  Hulse projects as an offensive tackle for the Statesmen.     Hulse Highlight Video
K_Gray

KENTERRIUS GRAY | RB | 5-11 | 220
Pinson, Ala. | Clay-Chalkville HS
Gray was a standout for coach Jerry Hood and the Cougars of Clay-Chalkville High School in Pinson, Ala.  The 5-foot-11, 220-pound running back helped guide the Cougars to the Alabama High School Activities Association Class 6A Semifinals.  As a junior, Gray rushed for over 500 yards and seven touchdowns.  In a senior season shared with a crowded backfield, Gray ran for 223 yards and six touchdowns, while grabbing one touchdown.  Gray Highlight Video
D_Evans

DAVID EVANS | CB | 5-8 | 170
Hueytown, Ala. | Hueytown HS
Evans garnered AHSAA All-State honors for coach Matt Scott.  As a standout defensive back, Evans recorded over 10 career interceptions for the Golden Gophers.  Evans was also a standout on the basketball court for Hueytown.
Trace Bray

TRACE BRAY | FB/LB | 5-9 | 195
Cleveland, Miss. | Cleveland HS
Bray played fullback and outside linebacker for head coach Kelly Causey at Cleveland H.S. Tallied 85 carries for 428 yds (5.04 ypc) and three touchdowns for the Wildcats during his senior season. The Cleveland, Miss. native also recorded 53 total tackles, two sacks, three caused fumbles and one fumble recovery on the defensive side of the ball.
Holder

DARIUS HOLDER | WR | 6-1 | 190
Lumberton, Miss. | Pearl River CC | Lumberton HS
Played two seasons at quarterback and wide receiver for Tim Hatten at Pearl River Community College.  As a sophomore, Holder grabbed a team-high 28 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns.  He also completed 2-of-7 passes for 95 yards and a score.   Spent his freshman season on the roster as a quarterback, rushing four times for 24.  Prior to his time at PRCC, Holder was an all-world athlete at Lumberton High School for coach Brian Ford, leading LHS to the 2010 MHSAA 2A State Championship.  The Lumberton, Miss., native was named 1st Team All-State by The Clarion Ledger and the Mississippi Association of Coaches.  He participated in Mississippi’s North/South game.  As a senior, recorded 38 tackles and three interceptions.  Offensively, Holder threw for 1,208 passing yards and 16 touchdowns to go along with 955 rushing yards and 11 scores.
Avant

BRANDON AVANT | OL | 6-2 | 290
Maben, Miss. | Northeast Miss. CC | East Webster HS
Avant played and started two seasons for coach Ricky Smither at Northeast Mississippi Community College.  Prior to his time at NEMSCC, Avant was a standout offensive and defensive lineman and powerlifter at East Webster High School for coach Jimmy Carden.  Avant garnered All-Region honors in 2009 and 2010, while also winning numerous medals in powerlifting.
Hicks

JADARIUS HICKS | RB/LB | 6-0 | 220
Jackson, Miss. | Hinds CC | Provine HS
Hicks played two seasons for coach Gene Murphy at Hinds Community College, where he was a mainstay at linebacker.  In 2012, Hicks recorded 50 tackles for HCC with 4.5 tackles-for-loss and three sacks.  As a freshman in 2011, Hicks tallied 93 tackles with 17 tackles-for-loss and six sacks.  Prior to Hinds, Hicks was a standout running back and linebacker for coach Willie Collins at Provine High School in Jackson, Miss.  The 6-foot, 220-pound running back was a two-time All-State and All-Metro selection by The Clarion-Ledger and Mississippi High School Coaches Association selection.  He was named to the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Team.

ANTON THORNTON | RB | 6-0 | 195
Gautier, Miss. | Mississippi Gulf Coast CC
Thornton transfers in from Mississippi Gulf Coast CC where he played for head coach Steven Campbell rushed for 804 yards on 127 carries for six total touchdowns. The Guatier, Miss. native, prepped at Pascagoula H.S. rushing for 451 yards and five touchdowns during his senior campaign for the Panthers.
Gibbs

Brandon, Miss. | Hinds CC | Northwest Rankin HS
Gibbs played two seasons on the offensive line for coach Gene Murphy at Hinds Community College.  Prior to his time at HCC, Gibbs lettered in baseball, football and soccer at Northwest Rankin High School.  He is the son of Mike and Kathy Gibbs.
Hibbler

CORTEZ HIBBLER | OL | 6-3 | 280
Sardis, Miss. | Northwest Mississippi CC | Alcorn State
Hibbler played one season at Northwest Mississippi Community College, starting all 10 games on the offensive line.  Prior to his time in Senatobia, Hibbler played one season at Alcorn State University.  A versatile lineman, the Sardis, Miss., native could play at both the guard or tackle spots for the Statesmen.

Birmingham, Ala. | Minor HSGarner an offensive lineman out of Minor H.S. played for head coach Randy Cook. The Adamsville, Ala. native was named to the 2012 All-Metro Preseason Squad.

EARL ANDREWS | WR/DB | 6-0 | 170
Farmerville, La. | Farmerville HSAndrews a product of Farmerville H.S. in Farmerville, La. played wide receiver and defensive back. Led the Farmers to a 10-3 overall record in the 2012 season hauling in 13 receptions for 234 yds (18.00 ypc) and four touchdowns while also racking up 61 total tackles and one tackle for loss.

Petal, Miss. | Pearl River CC
Conkle signs from Pearl River Community College where he played for head coach William Jones on the offensive line. The Petal, Miss.native was a two-sport athlete at Petal H.S. and Pearl River CC, playing both football and baseball.  Highlights

Pensacola, Fla. | Escambia HSLinzy was a two-year starter for head coach Willie Spears at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Fla. During his senior season, Linzy recorded 116 total tackles with 73 being solo tackles. Linzy also forced five fumbles while recovering three.  Participated in the 2012 Subway High School All Star Game presented by the Pensacola Sports Association. Highlights

Pensacola, Fla. | Escambia HS Myers played for head coach Willie Spears at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Fla. As a cornerback Myers made 37 tackles, broke up six passes, recorded four interceptions, forced one fumble, and recovered two during his senior season. Spent two seasons for the Tigers at Coahoma Community College under the direction of head coach Freeman Horton. Self prepped at Clarksdale High School under the direction of head coach Chuck Reid.

Did not see action as a member of the squad for the Bulldogs. Played fullback for coach David Coates at Northwest Rankin High School, where he also lettered in baseball.

DENNIS ROBERTSON | QB | 6-3 | 240
Gulfport, Miss. | Holmes CC | Gulfport HS
Played two seasons at quarterback for the Bulldogs for head coach Jeff Koonz. Finished his career with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Threw for 1474 yards and six touchdowns his sophomore season. Also rushed for 130 yards, and a team leading seven touchdowns. Helped the Bulldogs to a 5-4 record. Was named Honorable Mention All-State at quarterback for his efforts. Robertson was a two-sport athlete at Gulfport HS, also lettering in baseball. Earned Second Team All-District and Team MVP honors following his senior season.
Walker

Cairo, Ga. | Northeast MS CC | Cairo HS
Played one season for coach Ricky Smither and the Tigers. Walker was named Second Team All-Region following his freshman season in which he finished with 38 tackles, which ranked fourth on the team, and three tackles for loss. Played quarterback and defensive back at Cairo HS under head coach Tom Fallow, where he was named Second Team All-Region. Also lettered baseball and basketball for the Eagles.
Williams

Omega, Ga. | Clark Atlanta University | Tift County HS
Played two seasons at Clark Atlanta University for head coach Kevin Weston, where he led the Panthers with 93 total tackles, which ranked third in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Led the conference with four recovered fumbles and three forced fumbles. Prepped at Tift County High School under head coach Jay Walls. Led the team with 80 tackles as a junior, and finished second on the team with 76 tackles as a senior. Also lettered in basketball and soccer.

LANDRY TULLO | LB | 6-0 | 195
Hoover, Ala. | Hoover HSTullo played for head coach Josh Niblett racking up 110 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks, one fumble recovery and  one interception his senior season en route to a 6A AHSAA State Championship. The Hoover, Ala. Native anchored a defensive unit that compiled a 16-0 record and limited opposing offenses to just nine points per game during the 2012-13 season. Named to the 2013 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl East roster and 2012 Birmingham News Hoover Lineman of the Year

Florence, Miss. | Southwest Miss. CCMartin played the last two seasons at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, Miss. for head coach Tucker Peavey. Was named MACJC Second Team All-State for his play last season. Played on the offensive and defensive lines at Richland High School.

DEKOVEN WARE | LB | 6-2 | 220
Albany, Ga. | Coahoma CC | Terrell County HSPlayed one season at Coahoma Community College at linebacker.  Totaled 20 tackles with two interceptions, both returned for touchdowns.  Prior to playing at CCC, Ware played for William Huff at Terrell Middle High School where he was named Most Valuable Player, First Team All-Region and selected to the Dynamite Dozen by The Albany Herald.  Ware saw time at defensive end, tight end and even kicker for the Green Wave.  He was also a standout on the basketball court for TCHS.
Hunt

RICKEY HUNT | WR | 5-11 | 190
Sardis, Miss. | East Central CC | North Panola
Played one season each at East Central Community College and Northwest Mississippi Community College.  As a sophomore, Hunt grabbed 26 passes for 479 yards and three touchdowns.  Also returned 19 kicks for 462 yards and six punt returns for 77 yards.  He was named MACJC All-State and participated in the MACJC North-South All-Star Game.  As a freshman, Hunt caught 37 passes for 442 yards and a touchdown.  Prior to his junior college career, Hunt was a standout at North Panola High School.  He was named All-State and All-District during his time at NPHS.  He was also named a Bernard Blackwell All-Star and was MVP of the North-South All-Star game.
Fairley

DEON FAIRLEY | DB | 6-0 | 190
Taylorsville, Miss. | Jones (Miss.) JC
Fairley transfers in from Jones County JC where he played under head coach Ray Perkins. The talented defensive back recorded 28 total tackles, two fumble recoveries and one interception during the 2012-13 season. The Taylorsville, Miss. native prepped at Taylorsville HS leading the Tartars to an overall 13-1 record during his senior campaign in 2010-11.
Nixon

MARTEZ NIXON | WR | 5-11 | 175
Taylorsville, Miss. | Jones County Junior College
Nixon played at Jones County Junior College for head coach Ray Perkins. For the 2012 season, Nixon caught 11 passes for 124 yards in eight games with the Bobcats. Lined up as a wide receiver and as a defensive back at Taylorsville High School. As a senior at Taylorsville, Nixon caught 29 passes for 519 yards and six touchdowns.
