Bassfield claims state title No. 8



OXFORD — The dynasty continues for Bassfield.

Behind a stingy defense and the always potent rushing attack the Yellow Jackets ran past East Webster 39-20 to claim the MHSAA Class 2A state championship for the fourth year in a row at Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Friday afternoon.

It is Bassfield’s (14-2) eighth state championship in school history.

East Webster finished the game with just 204 yards of total offense. The Wolverines had minus eight yards of offense at halftime. The Wolverines only recorded nine first downs for the game (one in the first half).

Ron Thompson had 97 yards rushing on 16 carries to lead Bassfield. Sanchez Berry had 89 yards on just three carries and had a 77-yard touchdown run with 3:47 left in the second quarter to give Bassfield a 20-0 lead.

Timothy Arnold had 86 yards passing with a touchdown and also had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Yellow Jackets.

Jack Wilson had 127 yards passing with two touchdowns and also scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to lead East Webster (14-2).
