Capital Team of the Week for Week 3

The Mississippi Gridiron Capital Region Team of the Week features eight players from around the Metro area. Featured is Hartfield sophomore quarterback Cruz Garner who accounted for five touchdowns last week.

OFFENSE

Quarterback, Philip Short / MRA
MRA senior quarterback Philip Short (6’2, 205) completed 19-29 passes for 364 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Jackson Academy.

All-Purpose, Cruz Garner / Hartfield
Hartfield sophomore quarterback Cruz Garner (5’10, 175) completed 7-12 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-14 win over Park Place. Garner also rushed for a touchdown.

Running Back, Kenyatta Harrell / Pearl
Pearl senior running back Kenyatta Harrell (5’10, 190) rushed for 364 yards and six touchdowns on 31 carries in the Pirates 62-21 win over Ridgeland. Harrell rushed for 294 yards in the first half.

Wide Receiver, Brandon Buckhaulter / Hartfield Academy
Hartfield junior wide receiver Brandon Buckhaulter (6’3, 200) had four receptions for 139 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-14 win over Park Place.

DEFENSE

Defensive Line, Christopher Lloyd / Forest Hill
Forest Hill senior defensive end Christopher Lloyd (5’10, 210) had eight tackles, four tackles for loss and three hurries in a 19-12 win over Mendenhall.

Linebacker, Mose Stowers / Pisgah
Pisgah senior linebacker Mose Stowers (6’2, 190) had 13 total tackles including two tackles for loss and two hurries in a 53-13 win over St. Andrews.

Defensive Back, Thaxton Berch / Jackson Prep
Jackson Prep junior defensive back Thaxton Berch (5’11, 160) recorded 12 tackles and two interceptions in the Patriots’ 27-19 win over Oak Forest.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker, Mason Walker / Brandon
Brandon senior placekicker Mason Walker (6’4, 180) was 3-3 on extra points and 2-3 on field goals in a 27-14 win over Clinton.
