Collins scores 28 points in fourth quarter to repeat as 3A champs

OXFORD — Collins made a comeback for the ages.

Collins outscored Charleston 28-6 in the fourth quarter to rally past Charleston 34-32 in the all-Tiger match-up to claim the MHSAA Class 3A state championship for the second straight year at Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Collins (15-1) collected it’s fourth state championship in school history.

With the game tied at 26, Charleston’s Ahmad Alexander scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to give Charleston 32-26 lead with 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff Collins’ Calvin Keys returned it 75 yards for touchdown and the two-point conversion was good on a pass play from Detric Hawthorn to Derric Hawthorn, his twin brother, to give Collins the lead at 34-32 with 11 seconds left in the game. That was Collins’ first lead of the game.

Detric Hawthorn led Collins going 15 of 32 passing for 198 yards with a touchdown and threw two interceptions.

His touchdown pass was a 19-yarder to Calvin Keys with 11:30 left in the fourth quarter that cut the Charleston lead to 26-14.

Craig Buckley had two rushing touchdowns to lead Charleston. Billy Kimble had 114 yards with a touchdown for the Tigers (13-3).
