Petal wins in final seconds

Nate Jones connected on a 35-yard field as time expired as Petal knocked off another Top 5 team as No. 9 Petal knocked off Brandon 27-24 at Panther Stadium on Friday night in a huge Region 3-6A matchup.

Petal was up 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter when Brandon tied the game on a 58-yard touchdown pass from Will Rogers to Joshua Montague with 11:08 left.

Petal regained the lead 24-21 on a Jones 34-yard field with just over eight minutes left.

The Bulldogs tied it back up at 24 on a Mason Walker 21-yard field goal.

Petal would get the ball with around 2:48 left and drove to the Brandon 18-yard line before Jones came through with the game-winning field goal.

Petal (6-1) travels to Northwest Rankin on Friday in a matchup of 3-0 teams in Region 3-6A.

West Marion wins battle of unbeatens

West Marion got a late stop inside the red zone to get past Magee 12-7 in an all-Trojan matchup battle of unbeaten teams in Region 8-3A.

All of the scoring came in the first half.

Jeremiah Holmes scored on a 2-yard touchdown to run to give West Marion a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Magee answered on a Chandler Pittman rushing touchdown to take a 7-6 lead with seven minutes left in the opening quarter.

West Marion regained the lead 12-7 on a 14-yard run by Larry Holmes with three minutes left in the second quarter.

With under a minute to go in the game, West Marion turned the ball over on downs at their own 20-yard line but a penalty and a sack cost Magee a chance for the game-winning touchdown.

Holmes had 134 yards passing to lead the West Marion offense.

Northside flying under the radar

Northside is in its second year of existence and is off to a quiet 7-0 start.

The Gators are coming off a big 22-8 win over Charleston on the road in a key Region 3-2A matchup.

Northside quarterback Ja’Terrance Moore had three touchdown passes in the game to lead the Gators offensively.

Another key is the Northside defense which has given up just two touchdowns all season. The Gator defense has recorded 13 sacks led by Cordarrian Hickman with three sacks. Four other players have two sacks each.

Unbeatens go down

Four teams that were undefeated heading into Week 7 went down.

  • Ahmad Johnson had four rushing touchdowns to lead Pelahatchie past South Delta 63-34 in a Region 4-2A matchup.
  • Justin Smith threw four touchdown passes to lead Holmes County Central over Provine 32-13.
  • West Marion got two early rushing touchdowns and was able to hold off Magee.
  • Philadelphia jumped out to a 24-0 lead and never looked back as the Tornadoes beat Lake 37-15 in a key Region 6-2A matchup.
  • Kirk Academy knocked off previously unbeaten Winona Christian 27-26 in overtime.

Unbeatens remaining

There are now a total of 18 unbeaten teams remaining.

Top-ranked Madison Central is the only undefeated team in Class 6A. Second-ranked Picayune and eighth-ranked West Jones are the other unbeaten teams in 5A.

Itawamba AHS, Greenwood and South Pike are the undefeated teams in 4A.

Region 8-3A has the only undefeated teams in 3A in Columbia and West Marion. West Marion travels to Columbia on Thursday night.

Northside and Enterprise-Clarke are the onlu unbeaten teams in 2A.

Resurrection is the only unbeaten team in 1A.

Teams undefeated in the MAIS are Heritage Academy, Riverfield (La.), Greenville St. Joseph, Manchester Academy, Prairie View (La.) and Tensas (La.).
