MC Football Signs 15 on National Signing Day

CLINTON, Miss. — For the first time since 1995, the Mississippi College athletic department is able to hand out athletic scholarships with the impending move to Division II and the Gulf South Conference, beginning in the 2014-15 academic year. The MC football team had 15 players commit on National Signing Day to play for the Choctaws.

“It was a great day for our staff, our program and for Mississippi College,” said head coach John Bland. “This is only the start for this class, and we feel really good about where this group will end up when we get finished. This class comes in highly recommended from their coaches.”

The Mississippi College football coaching staff began to be formed on December 26th when Bland was named the 14th head coach in school history. Coming from the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky., Bland brought his offensive and defensive coordinators in Edgar Weiser and Michael Collins and his quarterbacks coach in Jay BrightRod Smith stayed on the staff as a defensive line coach after spending the 2013 season as the linebackers coach at MC.

“It’s really amazing to watch and be a part of this staff,” said Bland. “When I got here in January, my main concern was putting together a staff that would be able to work together and learn quickly. Not only was it difficult getting them here so quickly, but the transition would be tough as the school heads into Division II. There’s so much that goes into recruiting above just building relationships with the guys. This staff has worked so hard and it seems like they’ve been here for years. It’s really been impressive to see how well they’ve gotten acclamated to this new situation.”
