The Mississippi Gridiron Team of the Week for the third week of the season.  Players can be nominated each week by filling out our online nomination form.

Games of Aug. 30 – Sep. 1, 2012

Offense

QB, Jarius Moore, Sr, Terry
Senior quarterback Jarius Moore completed 20-24 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown in Terry’s 29-14 win over Ridgeland. Moore also rushed 19 times for 107 yards and another score.

QB, Gardner Minshew, So, Brandon
Sophomore quarterback Gardner Minshew completed 15-29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-7 win over Clinton.

RB Aeris Williams, Jr, West Point
Junior running back Aeris Williams led the Green Wave to a 26-19 win over Columbus by rushing for 162 yards on 32 carries with three touchdowns. Williams also returned a kickoff 86 yards for a score.

RB, Darrell Robinson, Sr, Noxubee County
Senior running back Darrell Robinson rushed 21 times for 217 yards and four touchdowns in a 60-14 win over New Hope. Robinson finished with 375 all-purpose yards.

RB, Boston Newsome, Sr, New Albany
Senior running back Boston Newsome had 43 carries and 236 rushing yards in a 21-14 win over Pontotoc. Newsome scored all three touchdowns for New Albany.

WR, Malik Dear, Jr, Murrah
Junior wide receiver Malik Dear led the Mustangs to a 33-27 win over Provine by catching six passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Dear added a rushing touchdown.

WR, Preston Baker, Sr, Starkville
Senior wide receiver Preston Baker caught five passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-0 win over Tupelo.

WR, Dalton Smith, Sr, Florence
Senior wideout Dalton Smith caught seven passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in a 25-20 loss to McLaurin. Smith added a rushing touchdown.

OL, Javon Patterson (So), Thad Roberts (So), Bo Barhum (Sr), Tione McCray (Jr), Curtis Garrette (Jr) / Petal
The Petal offensive line allowed the Panther offense to pile up 327 yards of total offense in a 35-21 win over Madison Central. They also helped running back Tyus Raine top the 100-yard rushing mark as he carried 23 times for 176 yards.

 

Defense

DT, Daniel Smith, Jr, Poplarville                   
Junior defensive lineman Daniel Smith had a team-high 12 tackles in Poplarville’s 41-13 win over Enterprise.

DT, Chris Jones, Sr, Houston
Senior defensive tackle Chris Jones had 14 total tackles, including 11 solo tackles, and a sack in Houston’s 45-8 win over Okolona.

DE, John Magee, Sr, Tylertown                     
Senior defensive end / linebacker John Magee finished with a team-high 13 tackles and a sack in Tylertown’s 47-7 win over Franklin County.

DE, Breeland Speaks, Jr, Callaway                        
Junior defensive end Breeland Speaks registered ten total tackles, including nine solo tackles, in a 32-12 win over Forest Hill.

LB, Quinterio Bailey, Sr, Water Valley
Senior linebacker Quinterio Bailey finished with 16 total tackles in a 38-17 win over Calhoun City. Bailey also had two tackles for loss and recovered a fumble.

LB, Trey Roberson, Sr, Indianola Academy
Senior linebacker Trey Roberson collected 13 total tackles and on sack in Indianola’s 36-20 win over Oak Hill Academy.

LB, Jonathan Burnett, Jr, Terry   
Junior linebacker Jonathan Burnett collected a team-high 13 total tackles, including 12 solo stops, in a 29-14 win over Ridgeland.

LB, Preston Rawls, Sr, Brookhaven Academy 
Senior linebacker Preston Rawls finished with 13 tackles in a 17-13 loss to Simpson Academy.

DB, Devontae Green, Jr, Natchez
Junior defensive back Devontae Green had seven tackles and two sacks in a 33-6 win over Ferriday (LA). Green forced a fumble and had two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown.

DB, Vaughnte Dorsey, So, Cleveland
Sophomore defensive back Vaughnte Dorsey had three tackles in a 27-8 win over Leland. He added two pass break-ups, one blocked punt and an interception for a touchdown.

DB, Payton Rodgers, Sr, Clinton
Senior defensive back Payton Rodgers had five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in a 37-7 loss to Brandon.

DB, Ronald Walker, Sr, Callaway
Senior defensive back Ronald Walker had eleven tackles, a sack and an interception in Callaway’s 32-12 win over Forest Hill.

 

Special Teams

PK, Evan Buckley, Sr, West Jones
Senior placekicker Evan Buckley booted three field goals in the Mustangs’ 30-7 win over Laurel. Buckley added three extra points.

P, Matthew Turcotte, Sr, Neshoba Central
Senior punter Matthew Turcotte punted six times for an average of 40.2 yards per punt in Neshoba Central’s 21-3 loss to Louisville. Turcotte had a long punt of 50 yards, and had one downed inside the 20 yard line.
