Oxford opens the season at No. 6 in our preseason rankings. Here is a look at the Chargers with a few comments from Coach Cutcliffe from this summer.

No. 6: Oxford Chargers

Head Coach: Chris Cutcliffe

2018 Record: 9-3 (Class 6A First Round)

Starters Returning: Offense: 8 Defense: 8

Players to Watch: QB John Meagher; TE Jeremiah Pegues; OL Montavius Wilson; LB Dude Person; DB Byron Pearson; LB Kiyon Williams; K/P Jack Tannehill.

Coach Speak: “When you have an experienced team and strong leadership you feel good about yourselves heading into the season. We had a lot of positives to build off of last year and it carried over in the offseason. We need it heading into the season. It is always good when the quarterback is back. John is such a weapon for us and does everything to make us better. Jeremiah will be a huge weapon for us. Defensively we lost a lot in the front seven, but have a lot back in the secondary. We’ve got guys on that side of the ball back that have been very consistent and we’ll need them to step up and not be complacent,” Cutcliffe said.

Outlook: In their second year of 6A last year the Chargers made it to the playoffs. With a veteran group back on both sides of the ball there is plenty of reason for optimism in Oxford. John Meagher returns at quarterback after throwing for 1,575 yards with 14 touchdowns. He also led Oxford in rushing with 536 yards and nine touchdowns. He will have a big target to throw to in tight end Jeremiah Pegues (346 yards receiving, five touchdowns, nine rushing touchdowns last year) along with receiver Babyde Pegues (470 yards, three touchdowns in 2018). On defense, linebacker Ron “Dude” Person returns at linebacker after leading the team in tackles with 95 along with four sack. He leads a young front seven. The majority of the secondary returns for the Chargers led by defensive back Byron Pearson, who had 56 tackles and led all of 6A last year with seven interceptions.
