West Point opens the season at No. 4 in our preseason rankings. Here is a look at the Green Wave with a few comments from Coach Chambless from this summer.

No. 4: West Point Green Wave

Head Coach: Chris Chambless

2018 Record: 14-1 (Class 5A State Champion)

Starters Returning: Offense: 4 Defense: 2

Players to Watch: RB Brandon Harris; RB Dantariyus Cannon; QB Gray Berry; LB Keon Cunningham; LB Tyron Orr; DE Donta Smith.

Coach Speak: “Last year nobody expected us to have the year like we did, and a lot of people are expecting us not to do much this year. That just motivates the guys. Our players know games are won and lost in the offseason, and they come in focused and work their tails off. Brandon Harris is the face of our program this year, our team leader and we’ll need him to carry us. Tyron Orr will have to do the same on defense. He’s the quarterback of our defense. One thing I love about our defense is guys who were not starters last year come up and make plays we need them too and they love to step up in big moments,” Chambless said.

Outlook: Can they make it four in a row? West Point once again has high expectations to get back to the state championship game and win it in December. Brandon Harris returns at running back to anchor an always punishing rushing attack that averaged 272.3 yards per game last year. Harris rushed for 1,225 yards with 20 touchdowns and will also see time at quarterback along newcomer Gray Berry. Dantariyus Cannon and Jimothy Mays also return at running back to help lead the run game. Defensively the Green Wave will lean heavily on linebackers Tyron Orr and Keon Cunningham along with defensive end Donta Smith to lead a youthful but fast West Point defense. Fans shouldn’t worry about just two returning defensive starters. This program makes a habit of introducing Mississippi to new talented players every season.
